SPINAL DISORDERS SCOLIOSIS TREATMENT

Scoliosis Treatment

The specialists grade the scoliosis and the treatment decisions are given according to these grades, especially in children and adolescents. If the grade  advances and exceeds a certain level, the disorder needs to be medically intervened.

In general, no intervention is required for scoliosis of 20-25 degrees for children in the growth phase. For curves of more than 20-25 degrees, a corset treatment may be recommended to prevent the progress of scoliosis, especially considering the growth process of small children. The purpose of the corset is to prevent or slow the progress. Corset use is not meant to correct the curvature.

If the growth is completed with less than 35-40 degrees of waist curvature and less than 45-50 degrees of back curvatures (two years after the first period for girls, and two years after the voice deepening for boys), it is expected that scoliosis will not progress further. Corset use is definitely not recommended after this age. If the patient is not complaining, only occasional follow ups are conducted.

However, if the patient is not happy with its condition (especially for scoliosis near the limit) or has a very advanced scoliosis, the only method to fix the issue is surgery. Surgical treatment is strongly indicated for growing children who exceed a preset limit, and optional for patients who have completed the growth phase but have relatively big scoliosis. If the patient doesn't feel aesthetically anxious, the specialists may leave the decision for surgery to the patient, while informing them about the possibility of pain in later years.
