Treatment Methods

Medication used to treat migraines can help eliminate pain during an attack, alleviate accompanying symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and can help to control the frequency of attacks. There are many types of medication available to treat migraines. It is known that some medication which is used to treat conditions such as epilepsy, hypertension, and depression can help to alleviate or eliminate migraines. New methods of treatment include Botulinum toxin treatment. Botulinum toxin is well known for its muscle relaxant properties. Research stemming from the assumption that Botulinum toxin affects a series of chemicals which can cause pain has shown that using Botulinum toxin can be beneficial for alleviating migraines and tension type headaches. Botulinum toxin treatment is particularly recommended to patients who have experienced headaches for a long time, who have tried a variety of different treatment methods and who are unable to tolerate the side effects of medication.

There are two broad categories of medication used to treat migraines:

  • Pain relieving medication: Taken during migraine attacks and which eliminate pain.
  • Preventive medication: These types of medication can be taken regularly on a daily basis to either reduce the intensity or the frequency of a migraine attack.

Treatment depends on the frequency, intensity and accompanying symptoms of the headache.

Medication is not recommended if you are pregnant or nursing. Some medication cannot be used to treat childhood migraines. Your doctor will prescribe you the most suitable medication.
