Overview

Femtosecond Laser

Laser eye surgery, or LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis), is the treatment of nearsightedness or refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) using laser systems. This eliminates the use of glasses or contact lenses to improve vision. Thanks to today''s developing technologies, laser eye treatment has very high success rates. Laser systems consist of a blade system called keratome and excimer laser. During the procedure, the flap is removed with the keratome and the cornea is corrected with the excimer laser. Today, femtosecond laser has replaced the blade systems.

What is Femtosecond Laser?

Femtosecond Laser (LASIK) is a new laser method that maximizes the success and safety of laser surgeries. It is also known as bladeless laser. The most important stage that affects the result in laser surgeries is the corneal flap formation stage. The flap removal process, which was previously created with the help of a knife, is now performed with femtosecond laser technology with femtoLASIK devices. Thus, risks such as rupture of the valve due to the use of a knife, more or less cutting, incomplete valve, irregular incision are eliminated. Moreover, with femtosecond laser, safer and more precise valve tissue can be obtained, rapid tissue adhesion is achieved after the procedure, less damage is left, less dry eye is seen and therefore a rapid recovery is achieved.

Who Can Have Laser Eye Surgery?

  1. Age: The ideal age range is 20-40 years.
  2. No change in eye grades in the last year.
  3. Myopia up to 10 degrees, hyperopia up to 4 degrees and astigmatism can be treated.
  4. After detailed tests and examinations, people whose eye and cornea structures are suitable for the treatment can be treated.

The detailed examination consists of two stages. In the first stage, the level of vision, the anterior segment of the eye, especially the cornea and lens tissue, and the posterior segment of the eye, especially the retina tissue, are clinically examined. In the second stage, topographic analysis of the cornea, biometric analysis of the lens, tear tests, retinal oct analysis are performed with the help of a computer. All these evaluations determine whether the eye is suitable for laser. Laser procedure is performed in suitable patients.

Questions About Laser Eye Surgery

  • Makeup should never be applied to the eye and its surroundings before laser surgery. Those who constantly wear contact lenses should stop using them a few days before the procedure.
  • Anesthesia in laser treatment is often administered with an eye drop
  • Pain or bleeding during and after the procedure is usually not expected. Stinging, watering and light sensitivity may occur.
  • People with laser eye treatment can have cataract surgery.
  • A second laser can be performed if the eye structure is suitable.
  • Laser treatment does not cure existing lazy eye.
  • Eye drops should be used for a while after laser treatment. As visual clarity is restored to a great extent the next day, normal life can be resumed quickly. Especially in the first month, it is important not to hit the eye and not to rub the eyes hard.
