Occupational physicians are medical practitioners who are certified by Ministry of Labor and Social Security. They work in cooperation with Occupational Safety Specialists to ensure compliance with laws and regulations at international standards for increasing occupational health and safety.

Their primary responsibilities are as follows; recording the practices regarding health surveillance in work place; inspection of workplaces regarding their legal responsibilities; ensuring implementation of medical practices and examinations; periodic examinations at recruitment and regular intervals set by laws and regulations; issuing health reports; and participation to Occupational Health and Safety Committee and field inspections.

Since working hours depend on the number of workers, occupational physicians may work either part-time or full-time. They closely monitor relevant laws and regulations due to very nature of their duties.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Occupational Physician

  • Providing the employer with guidance and counseling regarding occupational health.
  • Performing medical examinations at recruitment and at certain intervals throughout employment.
  • Training employees on overall topics of health.
  • Ensuring harmony between the employee and the employer by evaluating ergonomic and psychosocial risks while fulfilling requirement of the work.
  • Participating in studies of Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
  • Participating in surveillance studies and inspections in workplace.
  • Performing necessary inspections regarding maintenance and hygiene of cafeteria, dining hall, nursery and lactation rooms, dressing rooms, showers and toilets.
  • Participating in risk analysis studies within scope of occupational safety.
  • Performing preventive medical examinations pursuant to the legislation regarding evaluation and prevention of occupational risks.
  • Performing health surveillance for employees including night shifts.
  • Inspecting general hygiene conditions in work place.
  • Preparing annual working plan.
