Congenital Anomalies in Hands
Newborn infants may have hands that look somewhat abnormal due to problems that may occur in any stage of development of human arms. While a genetic factor is detected in some congenital hand anomalies, no apparent cause is identified in most congenital hand anomalies.
Prevalent Congenital Hand Anomalies and Diagnostic Methods
Congenital hand anomalies may be classified as follows; absence in components that form the arm; extra components in hand; over- or under-development of certain parts of hand; or webbing in fingers.
Minor or major hand anomalies are detected in one out of twenty births. The baby should be examined by a hand surgeon in order to recognize this anomaly and to determine if treatment is required.
Congenital anomalies may be associated with other medical conditions that are caused by genetic factors and advanced tests and examination may be required to detect such underlying conditions.
Treatment of Anomalies in Hands
Type of congenital hand anomaly is determined by surgeon in the light of examination and thus, most appropriate treatment modality is determined. Extra fingers can be surgically removed and the remaining fingers can be managed into a more functional form, if necessary. Hand functions can be restored if the limb cannot be efficiently used. Webbing can be corrected using appropriate surgical techniques. Physiotherapy may be required for certain congenital anomalies of hands to improve function. On the other hand, some conditions do not require any kind of intervention.
