Overview

Bronchoscopy is implies direct visualization of the entire airway using an imaging device, called bronchoscope. On the other hand, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) uses sound waves to create images of airways, lungs and other respiratory structure in a bronchoscopy session.

It is used for diagnosis of lung cancer, intra-bronchial hemorrhage, lymphoma and tuberculosis.

As is the case with conventional bronchoscopy, a bronchoscope with integrated ultrasound probe is inserted into mouth or nose cavity and advanced to trachea and bronchi in endobronchial ultrasound. EBUS technology allows sonographic examination of walls of airways, extraluminal pathologies and lymph nodes of the chest cavity.
