This technique is especially valuable in brain tumor surgeries, epilepsy treatments, and deep-brain stimulation (DBS) implantations. By using intraoperative MRI, surgeons can verify during the procedure whether the entire pathological tissue has been successfully removed, minimizing the risk of leaving residual tumor tissue behind and thus reducing the likelihood of repeat surgeries.

Intraoperative MRI procedures involve specialized operating rooms equipped with MRI-compatible surgical instruments and equipment to ensure safety and functionality. The MRI scanner is usually integrated directly within the surgical suite or situated in an adjacent room, enabling seamless imaging without requiring the patient to be moved extensively during surgery.

The device is installed in an area that is connected to the operating theater. It allows acquiring images of the anesthetized patient while the surgery is continued, when needed.

This method is of vital importance, especially in brain surgeries. The surgeon can perform necessary tests without reanimating the patient or suturing the surgical site at any point of the surgery when required. The need for a second operation is decreased, since certain risks are eliminated, such as inability to completely clear the residual material, damage to functioning areas or operating on wrong sites.
