MR-LINAC can irradiate and destroy the tumors, which are located in organs that move during treatment, with pinpoint accuracy. The nearby healthy tissues are meticulously spared while irradiating the tumor.

MR-LINAC is a “smart radiotherapy” technique that targets the tumor using special imaging modalities and measurements and uses radiation to destroy tumors. MR-LINAC has far developed equipment comparing to conventional radiotherapy and provides the radiation oncologists and patients with new and important gains thanks to MR (Magnetic Resonance) integrated to radiotherapy.

The radiation beams are accurately focused on tumor that is destroyed very precisely even when the tumor moves during treatment, for example when the patient breaths. Radiation oncologist can see the tumor clearly, similar to a surgeon who sees the tumor during surgery, and delivers the dose to destroy the tumor in a meticulous manner like a surgeon.

While the linear accelerator can be employed for all types of tumors, it is far more useful in tumors of pancreas, lung, prostate and abdominal organs well as hepatic metastases and liver cancers.

Successful outcomes are obtained in pancreatic cancer in treatments that follow MR-LINAC therapy. It is reported that the success rate has increased from 10 percent to 90 percent.

It is thought that MR-LINAC can be used for other tumors, which is regarded as a huge revolution in treatment. The targeted dose for a tumor at visualized location can be adjusted with this method. Therefore, treatment can be better performed.

After a planning CT is scanned, MRI is scanned and treatment is planned with MR-LINAC device. When the patient lies on the device, first, MRI is scanned and location of tumor is determined. Location of tumor and organs is determined again to verify existing anatomic structure and thus, dose distribution is checked for that day. If the treatment does not continue according to the plan, treatment is re-planned and started.

In this method, it is very important to image the target in pinpoint shooting. This can only be achieved with MRI. There are headphones to reduce the noise of MRI scanner during the treatment.

MR-LINAC enables physicians adjust instant doses by visualizing movements of the tumor and healthy organs. All these procedures are performed while the patient lies on the treatment table. The procedure is performed without exposing the patient to extra ionized radiation.

The radiation beams are accurately focused on tumor that is destroyed very precisely even when the tumor moves during treatment, for example when the patient breaths. When the patient is asked to hold breath, breathing can be directed with the images on camera. Treatment can last 20 to 60 minutes.

FAQ

  • Is MR LINAC appropriate for elderly patients and people with systematic problems?

There is no age limit for the treatment, but claustrophobia can cause problems.

  • Is anesthesia administered during treatment?

The treatment does not require anesthesia administration.

  • How is the preparation stage for MR LINAC therapy?

As is the case with conventional radiotherapy, planning CT is scanned along with diagnostic PET-CT and MRI.

  • Can MRI LINAC therapy be used in all types of tumor?

It can be employed in all radiotherapy practices.

  • Does MR LINAC damage other body parts during therapy?

As the tumor can be visualized in all sessions of MR LINAC therapies, the safety margin around the tumor is very narrow and it is known that themethod causes far less damage to the surrounding regions comparing to old technologies.

  • Are there any side effects of MR LINAC?

This technology has the same side effects of conventional radiotherapy modalities depending on the target volume.

  • Do the patients receiving MR LINAC emit radiation?

No, patients are irradiated in treatment room and they do not emit radiation thereafter. It is not carried by the patients.

  • What are the principal differences between MR LINAC and conventional radiotherapy?

The most important distinctive feature of MR LINAC is the use of MRI in treatment. It is also very distinguished, as the target volumes arere-visualized and the treatment plan is modified within several seconds due to transposition of the tumor, healthy tissues and organs at the target volume using high-definition imaging of soft tissues during treatment and thus, the treatment can be maintained with a new plan.
