What is TrueBeam?

TrueBeam is a linear accelerator used in radiotherapy. TrueBeam uses four different radiotherapy techniques: IGRT with IMRT, Rapidarc, SRT and SRS.

TrueBeam can be used in treatment of all cancers that require radiotherapy and it irradiates tumors that are smaller than 0.5 mm. TrueBeam is preferred especially for treatment of small tumors in brain or that are nearby risky organs in whole body.

TrueBeam STX is used for radiotherapy of tumors in organs, such as lungs, liver and breasts that require respiratory monitoring. Since radiation beams are delivered while respiratory motions are monitored (respiratory gating), location of tumor can be irradiated at high dose.

Techniques in TrueBeam

IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy): Radiation with adjusted intensity
RAPIDARC: The technique is used under guidance of imaging and it has a mechanism that can turn around the patient who lies on the treatment table.
STR (Stereotactic Radiotherapy): Punctuate radiation in multiple sequences.
SRS (Stereotactic Radiosurgery): Punctuate radiation in single session.
SRS/SRT: targets small tumors with punctuate radiation.
IGRT (Image Guided Radiotherapy): Accuracy of target site is determined with millimetric precision and patient’s position can be corrected for radiotherapy in case of any deviations.
IMRT and RAPIDARC: If the tumor surrounds and extends very close to an organ that should be spared, IMRT/RAPIDARC can be preferred.

Respiratory-gated TrueBeam

All radiotherapy techniques used in cancer treatment such as IMRT, IGRT, Gated RT, RapidArch, SRS, SBRT are used in combination. TrueBeam STX is used for radiotherapy of tumors in organs, such as lungs, liver and breasts that require respiratory monitoring. Since radiation beams are delivered while respiratory motions are monitored (respiratory gating), location of tumor can be irradiated at high dose.

  • Healthy tissues are exposed to less radiation as the beams are focused on the center of the target
  • Very high doses can be delivered in a single session.
  • Mechanical system moves fast.
  • Duration of irradiation is shortened as the radiation is delivered quickly.

TrueBeam can be used in treatment of all tumors that require radiotherapy.

It is preferred especially for treatment of small intracranial tumors or those nearby the risky organs in whole body.

It is among the treatment options for lung and spinal canal tumors and second series radiations.

TrueBeam is among linear accelerators used for radiotherapy and all treatments are guided over a computerized system.

The patient lies on the treatment table that can move in a wide range of axes of space. The device continuously turns around the patient and synchronizes the dosing and the imaging.

FAQ

  • What is TrueBeam?

TrueBeam can be used in treatment of all cancers that require radiotherapy and it irradiates tumors that are smaller than 0.5 mm.

  • What are indications of TrueBeam?

TrueBeam can be used in treatment of all tumors that require radiotherapy.

It is preferred especially for treatment of small intracranial tumors or those nearby the risky organs in whole body. It is used for radiotherapy of tumors in organs, such as lungs, liver and breasts that require respiratory monitoring.

Moreover, it is among appropriate treatment options for lung and spinal canal tumors and second series radiations.

  • What will I feel during TrueBeam therapy?

TrueBeam is not an open surgical procedure and sedation or anesthesia is not required; in other words, patients are awake throughout the treatment. Patient does not feel anything while radiation beams are delivered.

  • How long does a session take in TrueBeam therapy?

A session takes 2 to 3 minutes in TrueBeam therapy. On the other hand, a complex radiosurgery that normally takes about 40 minutes to 2 hours can be completed in 5 to 20 minutes in TrueBeam therapy.

  • Is scalp hair cut for TrueBeam therapy?

No, it is not necessary to cut scalp hair for TrueBeam therapy.

  • Can TrueBeam be used for elderly patients with systemic diseases?

    Yes, it can.
