Kyphosis Treatment

The specialists grade the kyphosis and the treatment decisions are given according to these grades, especially in children and adolescents. If the grade  advances and exceeds a certain level, the disorder needs to be medically intervened. As a general treatment scheme, no intervention may be necessary for growing children up to 60 degrees in the back region.

Curvatures over 60 degrees may be treated with a corset to prevent the progress, especially if there is a significant period of growth before the child (young age). Although the main purpose of the corset is to prevent or slow the progress, in contrast to scoliosis, the use of proper casting or corset may improve the curvature slightly, especially in little children.

The treatment method recommended for children whose kyphosis progresses in spite of the corset and exceeds 60 degrees is surgery. The specialist's recommendation of surgery must be taken seriously by the patient because  kyphosis reaching critical degrees (90-100 degrees) may cause fatal lung problems in patients.

The surgery recommendation degree may vary according th the doctor.. The Approach at Acıbadem Ankara Hospital Spine and Spinal Cord Center is 70 degrees. However, if the patient is not happy with its condition (especially for scoliosis near the limit) or has a very advanced scoliosis, the only method to fix the issue is surgery. Surgical treatment is strongly indicated for growing children who exceed a preset limit, and recommended for patients who have completed the growth phase but have relatively big kyphosis. If the patient doesn't feel aesthetically anxious, the specialists may leave the decision for surgery to the patient, while informing them about the possibility of pain in later years.
